New Nissan Tekton Is Coming to South Africa: Here’s What We Know

Nissan South Africa has started teasing the arrival of an important new SUV, and Driver Digest SA has received the message loud and clear: the new Nissan Tekton is coming soon.

Nissan describes its newcomer as a meeting point between striking design, confident capability, craftsmanship and innovative technology. Its latest communication carries an equally confident tagline: “Engineered with an edge.”

Fortunately, Nissan has already revealed enough internationally — and confirmed enough locally — to give South African motorists a much better idea of what is heading our way.

Meet the New Nissan Tekton

The Tekton is an all-new compact SUV developed and manufactured in India through the Renault-Nissan partnership. It uses the Alliance’s CMF-B platform and shares its foundations with the latest Renault Duster, although Nissan has given the Tekton a distinctive exterior and interior identity. The vehicle will be exported from India to around 50 markets across Africa and the Middle East.

At approximately 4.35 metres long, the Tekton sits in an interesting position within Nissan’s SUV family. In South Africa, it will effectively slot above the smaller Magnite and below the X-Trail, filling an important gap in Nissan’s local range.

And yes, Nissan South Africa itself now lists the Tekton (Coming Soon) alongside the Magnite and X-Trail on its local SUV pages.

A Little Patrol DNA

Perhaps the most interesting part of the Tekton is its styling.

Rather than simply creating a Nissan-badged Duster, the designers have drawn inspiration from the much larger Nissan Patrol. The Tekton features a sculpted bonnet carrying its name, a prominent interpretation of Nissan’s grille, distinctive L-shaped front lighting and C-shaped rear lights connected by a full-width light bar.

The result is a compact SUV that looks considerably more rugged and substantial than its dimensions might suggest.

That’s particularly significant in South Africa, where buyers certainly aren’t short of compact and medium-sized SUV options.

What Could Be Under the Bonnet?

This is where we need to apply the brakes slightly.

Nissan has not yet confirmed the South African Tekton engine range, so anything more specific remains provisional.

International information points towards turbocharged petrol powertrains, while the Tekton’s close relationship with the Duster gives us some clues about what could eventually reach our market. Reports have highlighted 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbocharged options, with the latter producing as much as 120 kW and 280 Nm in certain configurations.

We’ll wait for Nissan South Africa to confirm exactly which engines, transmissions and specifications local buyers receive before calling those numbers official for Mzansi.

Technology Won’t Take a Back Seat

The international Tekton reveal also points towards a substantially more sophisticated cabin than motorists might expect from Nissan’s smaller SUV offerings.

Features revealed for the vehicle include Google built-in connectivity, Google Maps and Google Assistant, while higher specifications can include ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof and digital instrumentation. Driver-assistance technology revealed internationally includes adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot monitoring.

Again, South African specifications and model grades still need to be confirmed. Don’t assume every shiny feature on the international model will automatically appear on every local Tekton.

Nissan Has Big Plans for South Africa

The Tekton’s arrival also matters beyond the vehicle itself.

Nissan South Africa Managing Director Juan Wheeler recently described the refreshed X-Trail as the first in a series of new local launches and specifically confirmed that the Tekton will follow it. Nissan Africa has similarly reiterated plans to introduce additional SUVs across the continent.

The timing couldn’t be more interesting. South Africa’s vehicle market is becoming increasingly competitive, particularly as Chinese manufacturers rapidly expand their local SUV and new-energy offerings.

The Tekton therefore has an important job to do.

For now, Nissan South Africa isn’t displaying a starting price for the Tekton, but the company has officially added the SUV to its local vehicle catalogue with the option to register interest.
