2026 MotoGP Austrian GP: Pedro Acosta Claims Maiden MotoGP Victory
Pedro Acosta finally became a MotoGP Grand Prix winner with a superb performance at the 2026 MotoGP Austrian GP, delivering victory for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing at the manufacturer’s home circuit. After fighting his way through the leading Aprilias, Acosta controlled the closing stages at the Red Bull Ring to secure the long-awaited first Sunday victory of his MotoGP career.
Jorge Martin finished second for Aprilia Racing and strengthened his position at the top of the championship standings, while teammate Marco Bezzecchi completed the podium. Marc Marquez endured a more difficult afternoon and crossed the line fifth, leaving Martin with a 12-point championship advantage as MotoGP prepares to head to Japan.
For Acosta, however, the 2026 MotoGP Austrian GP belonged to the KTM rider.
Aprilia Takes Control at the Start of the 2026 MotoGP Austrian GP
Aprilia could hardly have asked for a better opening to the race. Martin, Bezzecchi and Ai Ogura occupied the first three positions after the opening lap, while Acosta quickly moved into fourth.
Marc Marquez lost three positions during the opening lap, allowing Acosta to move ahead as the KTM rider began his charge towards the front.
Bezzecchi briefly took the lead from Martin at Turn 1 on Lap 2, but Martin immediately responded at Turn 3. Behind them, Acosta was already making progress.
The Spaniard passed Ogura at Turn 6 to move into third place and rapidly closed the gap to Bezzecchi.
Acosta’s progress was particularly significant following his mistake during Saturday’s Sprint. Rather than allowing that disappointment to define his 2026 MotoGP Austrian GP weekend, the KTM rider responded with an increasingly confident Sunday performance.
Acosta Charges Towards the Lead
Acosta moved into second place on Lap 4, passing Bezzecchi at Turn 2b. It was the same area where his Sprint mistake had occurred less than a day earlier.
Martin and Acosta then began breaking away from the riders behind them. By the end of Lap 7, the leading pair had established an advantage of approximately 1.5 seconds over Bezzecchi.
The decisive move arrived on Lap 9.

After initially passing Ogura for fourth, Marquez ran wide at Turn 1 and lost positions to both Ogura and Brad Binder. Another mistake at the same corner subsequently allowed Fermin Aldeguer through, dropping Marquez as far as seventh.

Marquez passed Aldeguer on Lap 20 to regain fifth place, but the riders fighting for the podium were already several seconds further up the road.

Aprilia Applies Late Pressure
Acosta appeared comfortable as the race entered its second half, holding an advantage of approximately seven-tenths of a second over Martin on Lap 16.
However, the Aprilia riders were not finished.
Acosta’s pace briefly dropped into the 1:31s on Lap 21, reducing an advantage that had previously exceeded one second. Martin, Bezzecchi and Ogura were all circulating in the 1:30s, creating the possibility of a dramatic conclusion.
Acosta immediately responded.
A 1:30.693 on the following lap helped stabilise his advantage, and he gradually rebuilt the gap. With two laps remaining, Acosta was approximately 1.4 seconds clear.
Behind him, another battle was developing. Bezzecchi closed onto the rear of Martin’s Aprilia as the teammates fought over second place.
Martin held his nerve, while Acosta began his final lap with an advantage of approximately 1.2 seconds.
There would be no final mistake.
Acosta Wins the 2026 MotoGP Austrian GP
Acosta completed the final lap cleanly and crossed the line to claim his maiden MotoGP Grand Prix victory.
It ended a remarkable sequence in which the young Spaniard had accumulated 15 MotoGP podium appearances without winning a Sunday Grand Prix.
The location made the breakthrough even more significant. Acosta delivered victory at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, the home event for both KTM and Red Bull, ahead of the rider and manufacturer’s respective changes expected for 2027.
Martin secured second place, while Bezzecchi finished just 0.192 seconds behind his Aprilia teammate in third.
Ogura narrowly missed the podium in fourth, finishing only 0.9 seconds behind Bezzecchi on his return to competition.

Aldeguer received a three-second post-race penalty following contact during the Grand Prix but remained classified eighth.

Martin Takes Championship Lead to Japan
The implications of the 2026 MotoGP Austrian GP extend well beyond Acosta’s breakthrough victory.
Martin leaves Austria leading Marquez by 12 points in the MotoGP World Championship. Bezzecchi remains firmly involved as well, sitting 42 points behind the championship leader.
The championship now moves towards Motegi for the Japanese Grand Prix, where Ogura will race in front of his home supporters following his impressive fourth-place finish in Austria.
Yet the Red Bull Ring will be remembered primarily for Acosta.
