The Saturday Drive: Sometimes the Destination Doesn’t Matter
Most of our driving has a purpose. We drive to work, take children to school, visit shops, attend appointments and battle our way through traffic because somewhere else demands our presence.
Saturday offers another possibility: driving simply because you enjoy driving.
You don’t necessarily need an impressive destination. Choose a road you haven’t travelled recently, put on some good music and allow yourself to enjoy the experience behind the wheel. Cape Town and the wider Western Cape certainly provide plenty of opportunities for scenic weekend motoring, but even a familiar route can feel different when you’re not watching the clock.
It also gives you an opportunity to reconnect with your car. Listen to how it sounds, notice how it responds and enjoy the characteristics that made you choose it in the first place.
Naturally, a spontaneous Saturday drive still deserves some preparation. Check your fuel or charge level, tyres and weather conditions before heading somewhere unfamiliar.
Cars are incredibly practical machines, but practicality isn’t the only reason many of us love them.
Sometimes you don’t need an appointment, event or carefully planned destination.
You just need an open road and a Saturday afternoon.
