How to Prepare Your Car for Safe Night Driving

Driving after dark presents challenges that simply aren’t as noticeable during daylight hours. Before heading out for a Saturday evening drive, spending a few minutes preparing your vehicle can make the journey considerably safer.

Start with your headlights. Check that the low beams, high beams, indicators, brake lights and rear lights are working properly. Dirty headlight lenses can also reduce visibility, so give them a quick clean before leaving.

Your windscreen deserves attention too. Dust, fingerprints and streaks that seem harmless during the day can create distracting glare when illuminated by approaching headlights. Check your washer fluid and make sure the wipers aren’t leaving streaks.

Tyres should have sufficient tread and appropriate pressure, particularly if your night journey could involve wet roads. Adjust your mirrors before departing and reduce excessive dashboard brightness if it interferes with your view of the road.

Most importantly, prepare yourself as well as the car. Fatigue can seriously affect concentration and reaction times.

Night driving means pedestrians, animals, potholes and other hazards may become visible much later than expected. A properly prepared vehicle—and an alert driver—can make that Saturday night journey considerably safer.
