What to Check Before a Long Road Trip

Preparing your vehicle before a long journey can save you from unexpected breakdowns and improve safety for everyone on board. Spending just a few minutes checking the essentials can make your trip far more enjoyable.

Start by inspecting your tyres. Ensure they are correctly inflated and have sufficient tread depth. Don’t forget to check the spare wheel as well. Next, examine your engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and windscreen washer fluid, topping them up where necessary.

Test all exterior lights, including indicators and brake lights, to ensure other road users can clearly see your intentions. Windshield wipers should also be in good condition, especially if rain is expected during your travels.

Pack an emergency kit containing a torch, jumper cables, first aid supplies, drinking water, and basic tools. A phone charger and reflective warning triangle are also worthwhile additions.

Finally, plan your route in advance and allow extra travel time to avoid unnecessary stress. Taking regular breaks every two hours helps maintain concentration and reduces driver fatigue.
