2026 F1 Spanish GP Results: Antonelli Wins as VSC Costs Norris Madrid Victory

The 2026 F1 Spanish GP results delivered another major victory for Kimi Antonelli, but the first Formula 1 race at Madrid’s new Madring circuit could easily have ended very differently.

Antonelli claimed his eighth victory from the opening 14 Grands Prix of the season, further strengthening his position at the top of the Drivers’ Championship. However, Lando Norris appeared to have the pace needed to win before the timing of a Virtual Safety Car transformed the race.

Max Verstappen ultimately crossed the line second, with Norris recovering to third after losing valuable time during his pit stop. Charles Leclerc finished fourth ahead of George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton suffered a disappointing retirement after encountering brake problems.

With strategy, a VSC and several battles influencing the Formula 1 outcome, there is plenty to unpack from the 2026 F1 Spanish GP results.

Kimi Antonelli Takes Eighth Victory of 2026

Antonelli arrived in Madrid already leading the championship and left Spain with an even greater advantage.

The Mercedes driver started second alongside pole-sitter Norris and initially struggled to match the McLaren’s pace. Norris successfully defended the lead at the start before beginning to build a gap as Antonelli made a couple of small mistakes.

Everything changed when a short Virtual Safety Car period arrived just as Antonelli approached the pit entrance. Mercedes was able to take advantage immediately, giving its driver a considerably cheaper stop.

Norris had already passed the pit entry when the VSC was called and therefore could not respond on the same lap. Once Charles Leclerc eventually made his late stop, Antonelli returned to the front and went on to claim victory.

It was his eighth win from 14 races, while his championship advantage over Mercedes teammate George Russell increased to 81 points.

Lando Norris Loses His Chance at Victory

Norris had already made his intentions clear during qualifying.

The reigning World Champion produced what he described as one of the best qualifying laps of his Formula 1 career, beating Antonelli to pole by just 0.011 seconds. With overtaking opportunities expected to be limited around the Madring, that put Norris in an excellent position heading into Sunday.

His race pace backed up that performance.

Unfortunately for McLaren, the VSC arrived at exactly the wrong moment. Norris pitted on the following lap, but the VSC had ended by then. A slow seven-second stop compounded the damage and dropped him to fifth.

Norris fought back impressively to finish third, but the podium offered little consolation after looking capable of winning the race. Even Antonelli acknowledged afterwards that he believed Norris had deserved victory.

Verstappen Takes Second in Madrid

Max Verstappen’s route to second place was anything but straightforward.

The Red Bull driver became embroiled in an early battle with Hamilton after running off track at the opening corner. Verstappen initially retained his position but was instructed by Red Bull to hand the place back to avoid a possible penalty.

That decision also meant relinquishing a position to Antonelli after Verstappen had already passed the Mercedes.

Hamilton’s subsequent brake trouble moved Verstappen back into podium contention. The Dutchman then benefited from the VSC during his own pit stop and successfully held off the recovering Norris during the closing stages to secure second place.

Ferrari Endures Mixed Spanish Grand Prix

Ferrari showed encouraging speed during the weekend, but the 2026 F1 Spanish GP results again left the team wondering what might have been.

Hamilton qualified fourth and made an excellent start, but brake trouble quickly derailed his race. After repeatedly running through escape areas, the seven-time World Champion was eventually forced to retire.

Leclerc enjoyed a better afternoon.

Ferrari elected not to pit him during the VSC, allowing the Monegasque driver to inherit the lead. The team appeared to be gambling on another Safety Car or red flag that could have transformed his strategy.

Neither arrived.

Leclerc eventually had to stop after completing 48 laps on the hard tyres. He rejoined in fourth and managed to keep Russell behind him to secure a useful points haul for Ferrari.

2026 F1 Spanish GP Results Strengthen Antonelli’s Title Charge

Madrid’s first Formula 1 Grand Prix produced a memorable result for Antonelli and Mercedes.

While fortune surrounding the Virtual Safety Car undoubtedly played its part, Antonelli was in the position required to capitalise when the opportunity appeared. His eighth victory of the campaign has now stretched his championship advantage over Russell to 81 points.

Russell’s fifth-place finish also dealt a significant blow to his own championship ambitions. With nine Grands Prix remaining, he admitted after the race that realistically he no longer considered himself part of the Drivers’ Championship fight.

For Norris, meanwhile, Madrid will likely remain one of the victories that got away. His qualifying performance and race pace demonstrated that McLaren had the speed to challenge Mercedes, but the timing of the VSC completely altered the complexion of the Grand Prix.

The 2026 F1 Spanish GP results therefore add another victory to Antonelli’s increasingly impressive campaign — and make the Italian’s pursuit of his maiden Formula 1 World Championship look stronger than ever.
